She might never be a royal, but she is living that fantasy. After almost four years out of the limelight, "Royals" singer, Lorde, released her brand new album, Solar Power, in August 2021. The New Zealand-based songwriter rose to prominence when she released her album, Pure Heroine, as a teenager. Later, Lorde contributed to the movie business by writing new music.
With her newest album out, she earns more praise in the music industry. But do fans recall what movie she composed a song for?
Lorde is known for her original electropop songs
After she climbed to worldwide fame with the "Royals" single, Lorde built a reputation around her unconventional musical style. Some of her other biggest hits from Pure Heroine include "Team," "Tennis Court," and Glory and Gore."
In 2017, Lorde released her second album Melodrama, which includes the singles "Green Light," "Homemade Dynamite," and "Perfect Places." She promoted her new album through a world tour and several festival performances such as Coachella.
The singer commented on her second album's emotional emphasis in an interview with Time: "For a lot of people, their teenage years would be where they were most emotionally accessible, and for me, it was the opposite," Lorde said. "When I was 16, it felt important to be unfazed by things. Now I'm deeply fazed."
What movie did Lorde write a song for?
Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat" has a battle-based, electropop backdrop and describes a heroine with "silver and gold" scars. She composed this song and curated the soundtrack for the popular film franchise, The Hunger Games.
Lorde contributed to the third installment, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1. The movie is based on the final book in Suzanne Collins' trilogy. Lorde's music video focuses on her as the symbolic heroine.
When The Hunger Games was released in 2012, it received widespread critical acclaim and financial success. Becoming one of the most popular film franchises in cinematic history, the four films star Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne.
Lorde is in 'full pop star mode'
According to USA Today, Lorde discussed her newest album and her musical influences, including the Eagles and the Mamas & the Papas. The singer believes their music "sounds so unshiny and so outdoors."
Now that she is traveling, Lorde said this is "such a different mode for me, coming from being at home to wearing makeup all the time and being on camera. But I'm enjoying myself. Full pop star mode has been activated."
She also commented on the environmental inspiration behind Solar Power.
"If you told me the thing that's going to be really inspiring is going for a walk in the park by your house every day for a year, I would have been like, 'No, no no,' I'm not gonna write an album about that," the "Yellow Flicker Beat" singer said. "But I did. So [the music] sort of comes from places that are difficult to pinpoint. I didn't really feel any pressure to make it happen…I had a specific kind of epiphany around the natural world, and with that came the realization that people in my position are not going to be the ones to save us all spiritually."
However, Lorde claimed her album is a reminder she is "just as [messed] up as you are. Don't look at me [for spiritual guidance]. But if we all look up here, maybe we'll find out something interesting about ourselves."
